• Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes at least twice a day every day, especially before bed.
• Floss your teeth at least once a day every day.
• Schedule and maintain a routine maintenance check-up schedule. Routine cleanings and exams assist the fight against tooth decay and gum disease. Also, staying with a routine schedule gives a clear picture to the hygienist and/or dentist of your mouth anatomy and helps foresee any possible issues. Early detection and treatment is the key to help prevent gum disease, extensive treatment needs and/or tooth loss.
- You should have 2 cleanings and examinations per year (standard is usually 1 cleaning & exam every 6 months).
- Have the recommended x-rays suggested by your hygienist and/or dentist. X-rays show areas that a visual exam cannot detect, such as in between your teeth.
• Schedule any treatment issues with your dentist at your earliest convenience to prevent treatment needs from becoming more advanced.
• Maintain a healthy diet.
- Avoid drinks and foods with high sugar contents such as soda, candy, sports drinks, flavored waters, and fruit chews.
- Eat fruits and vegetables.
- To prevent staining on teeth, avoid coffee and teas.
• Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco.
