According to the American Dental Association, women are more likely to develop gum infections or gingivitis while pregnant. Gums can be swollen and tender and may bleed while brushing and flossing. Do not let this deter you from doing so. It is important to maintain a daily routine of brushing with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing daily effectively.
Continuity of dental care is also important. Make sure you inform your dental care provider of your pregnancy as well as any changes in your medications and/or supplements. X-rays are often postponed until your baby is born, but are sometimes necessary for dental treatment. If this is the case, a lead apron and thyroid collar are used to protect your baby.
Untreated oral heath issues have the potential to be harmful to your and your child. Be sure to be diligent about home and office care.
Keep smiling!!
