Halloween Candy and Your Teeth

Halloween is just around the corner and you might be questioning how bad all that candy is for your children’s teeth.

The “best” candy would be sugar-free gum that is sweetened with xylitol, which is a natural sugar that bacteria is unable to form plaque on.  Another not so bad option would be chocolate, if there is no sticky filling inside (therefore it would not stick to your teeth as much).

The “worst” candy is taffy or candies that have sticky fillings; these candies stick in the grooves of your teeth and bacteria will feed on it, producing cavity-causing acid.  Hard candies are almost as bad, as they take a long time to dissolve which makes your mouth become more acidic.

Just remember to brush and floss after eating your Halloween candy!
