Merry Christmas everyone! This week I’ve been testing out the new Sonicare app. It works with the newest generation of Sonicare toothbrushes that actually do have Bluetooth. This includes the Diamondclean Smart, which is available at our front desk. Now, I’ll admit that I was skeptical that the app would be much more than a gimmick. I was quite surprised and very impressed by what I discovered. The app is fairly intuitive and well designed. After pairing your toothbrush with your phone (let that sink in for a minute) you start brushing. As the timer counts down, the image guides you to different areas of the mouth, helping you spend the proper amount of time in each area. Even more impressive, it also tells you if you are pressing too hard, risking tooth wear, or if you are moving the brush too much, leaving plaque behind. After you’re done it shows you areas that you missed. During a test run I brushed only the cheek sides of my teeth, and sure enough the app told me to improve my brushing on the tongue side (white is clean, yellow is not). It asks you if you flossed or used a mouth rinse. It also tracks your brushing over time, allowing you to see your progress over time. Impressive!
Now, do I think this is something I will use every night? Probably not. But I do see it as a valuable tool to help our patients perfect their brushing technique. In fact, the best use of it might be for parents to track their kids’ oral hygiene.
If you’re looking for the perfect last-minute gift for your friend, family member, or co-worker with bad breath, I highly recommend one of the new Sonicare toothbrushes!
Hope you enjoyed this week’s blog!

Another year is coming to a close, so we wanted to remind everyone that if you have HSA or flex dollars remaining, there is only one month left to use them. Also, insurance companies that are on a calendar year plan will end December 31 and start over for the new year. These are your dollars to use, so don't lose them!
We have had a few questions regarding "alternating benefits" recently. This is when there is a clause in your dental benefits that states composite (white) fillings on posterior (back) teeth will be paid at an amalgam (silver filling) rate, which means that the reimbursement is much less. Silver fillings are only done when the access is tough and only a silver filling can be done. If you have questions regarding this please give our office a call and we will do our best to get you answers to these questions.
Have a wonderful holiday season - and remember that a great present for under the tree is a Sonicare toothbrush! You can purchase these at our office; call us at 507-345-7786 for more information.

Are you still looking for that perfect Christmas present? Then you should think about getting a Phillips Diamond Clean Sonicare. It is the perfect gift. Every day it makes your teeth feel as clean as if you just left the dental office. Your manual brush only brushes what it touches, but the Sonicare brushes what it touches, plus a surrounding 2 mm. This is the gift they will love getting. For our dental patients at Commerce Drive Dental we offer this toothbrush at cost. That is an $85.00 savings compared to the in-store prices. Plus, Sonicare is currently offering a $20.00 rebate on top of that.

Philips (the company that makes the Sonicare electric toothbrush) has now come out with the Sonicare AirFloss. This is a great product for those who have a hard time flossing due to tight teeth, small mouths, or braces, or those people who just don’t like to floss. Now you can clean in between all of your teeth in about 60 seconds. The AirFloss has a reservoir which holds water and/or Listerine (if you are going to use Listerine, you will want to make sure to run warm water through the nozzle a couple of times per week to prevent clogging). Place the AirFloss between your teeth, holding it up against the side of your teeth while pointing the tip in between two teeth, and then press the button. The AirFloss will send a quick burst of air and water at the same time and blast plaque and debris out from in between the teeth. Cleaning between the teeth is quick and very easy with this new device. Ask us about the Sonicare AirFloss at your next dental appointment!
