Is it safe to receive dental anesthetic during pregnancy?

The Journal of the American Dental Association recently published an article regarding this subject.  The article covered several types of dental procedures, including root canals, dental restorations, and tooth extractions both with and without dental x-rays, and found all treatment to be safe during pregnancy.  Furthermore, lidocaine is a pregnancy category B medication, meaning there is no evidence of risk shown in humans.  It is also considered to be safe during breast feeding.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind.  The second trimester is the safest time to receive dental treatment in pregnancy.  Also, you should review all medications and medical conditions with your dentist to make sure dental treatment is safe for you.  Consulting with your OB/GYN may also be prudent for peace of mind or if your medical condition warrants it.
