Nitrous Oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” can be used in the dental office as a safe and effective way to help you relax and feel more comfortable. It does not put you to sleep and you are able to hear and respond to directions or requests from the dentist. A small mask is placed over your nose and you are asked to breathe normally through your nose; within minutes you should feel the effects of the Nitrous Oxide. Some describe it as a tingling sensation in your arms and legs and a feeling of being relaxed and comfortable. When the dental procedure is over you are placed on straight oxygen and are requested to breathe that for several minutes. There are no lingering effects and you are safe to drive afterwards.
