Canker sores are small round sores that are inside the mouth. They start as a tingling sensation which is followed by a yellow or white sore surrounded by a red area. They usually will heal in one to two weeks. Causes can be an inherited tendency or the body’s immune system. Outbreaks can be triggered by injury, toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate, stress, or dietary deficiencies. They are not contagious. Treatment can be over the counter numbing agents or an antimicrobial mouthwash.
